Xdoc is a project to rewrite all of the LaTeX doc system; what exists so far are xdoc2 and docindex. Xdoc2 extends the existing doc system, reimplementing many of its mechanisms, and adding commands and environments for describing things (in the manner of \DescribeMacro), support for external cross-references, and sorting improvements (among other things). The docindex/docidx2e packages allow more flexible formatting of the index and list of changes.
