Deprecation of outdated MiKTeX package manager

The MiKTeX package manager uses a web service to retrieve a list of valid package repositories. The address of this web service changed in October 2016 from http://api.miktex.org/repository.asmx to https://api2.miktex.org/.

Use of the old web address is now deprecated and all MiKTeX package manager versions which use the old web address are considered to be outdated.

MiKTeX users with an outdated package manager are encouraged to try one of the next options.

Option 1: Update MiKTeX

You can run the MiKTeX Update Wizard to update your MiKTeX installation. But the older your current MiKTeX installation, the higher the chance that this fails.

Option 2: Reinstall MiKTeX

You can uninstall the current MiKTeX version and the install the latest version.

Option 3: Local package repository

If, for some reason, you want to keep your current MiKTeX installation, you will lose the ability to install packages from a remote package repository. You have the option to install from a local package repository: download everything from https://ctan.org/tex-archive/systems/win32/miktex/tm/packages/ to a local folder (local package repository).
